Limited-Time In-Person Appointments for Ohio Residents

With the recent closure of the Ohio State Behavior Department, we understand how challenging it can be to access behavior care for your patients. To help bridge this gap, Dr. Maggie O’Brian, board-certified veterinary behaviorist, is offering a limited number of in-person appointments for Ohio residents.

These in-person appointments allow us to establish a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR), which is legally required in Ohio for prescribing medications. Once the VCPR is established, ongoing care—including comprehensive behavior consultations and follow-up—can be provided virtually through Virtual Veterinary Behavior Medicine (VVBM).

How It Works

What is Virtual Veterinary Behavior Medicine?

Virtual Veterinary Behavior Medicine offers compassionate, expert care from a board-certified veterinary behaviorist for dogs and cats with behavioral challenges. We take the time to understand your pet and create a treatment plan tailored to their unique needs—so you can get the help you need from the comfort of your own home.

For Ohio families, we’re also offering a limited in-person opportunity to make the process even smoother. This allows us to establish a VCPR and provide direct prescribing when appropriate, helping your pet get started on the right path in a streamlined manner.

FAQs

Why do I need an in-person appointment first?
Ohio law requires an established VCPR before prescribing medications. The in-person exam fulfills this requirement.

Is there a cost for the in-person exam?
No. The November 5th and 6th in-person exams are free of charge when booked alongside a virtual consultation.

What if my pet doesn’t need medication?
Behavior therapy can still be extremely helpful without medication, but establishing the VCPR ensures all treatment options are available if needed.

Does it matter if I have the in-person visit or virtual consult first?
Either order is fine—you can schedule whichever works best for you. However, medications cannot be prescribed until after the November in-person visit. We can still meet virtually beforehand to discuss your pet’s history and make initial recommendations.

I’m an Ohio resident and need a veterinary behavior consult, but I cannot make the November dates. Can I still access care?
Yes! You can still utilize our fully virtual service, which is available nationwide. We work in conjunction with your primary veterinarian to implement a complete treatment plan—including medication recommendations when indicated—to help your dog or cat.
