Telemedicine in California
As of 2023, California Assembly Bill 1399 has paved the way for enhanced veterinary care through telemedicine. This legislation allows veterinarians to conduct virtual appointments and provide guidance on medications remotely, making it easier for pet owners to access veterinary care from the comfort of their homes. Here’s what you need to know about this new development and how it can benefit you and your pet.
Key Features of Assembly Bill 1399
- Telemedicine Access: The bill authorizes veterinarians to use telemedicine to evaluate and treat pets through virtual consultations.
- Requirements: To comply with the new regulations, telemedicine appointments must include:
- Two-Way Audio/Video Communication: Both the veterinarian and the pet owner must be able to see and hear each other during the consultation.
- Regular Appointments: For ongoing care, telemedicine appointments must be scheduled at least every 6 months.
Restrictions
- Medication Limitations: Certain medications, including controlled substances, cannot be prescribed through telemedicine. This restriction ensures the safe and appropriate use of medications that require close monitoring.
What does this mean for pet parents?
- You can schedule your consultation with Dr. O’Brian or Dr. Baucom, both of whom are licensed in the state of California. While we still work closely with your primary care veterinarian, we do not require a referral form. We can also prescribe certain medications for your pet if that is part of the treatment recommendation plan.
